UPS/BACKUP

Ioxus ultracapacitors and hybrid-capacitors, while providing more power with lower resistance and low cost, also provide large energy storage solutions and contain effective backup capabilities. Module banks of ultracapacitors could easily be integrated with an battery system to provide this additional energy storage backup solution because they have a very similar voltage range. They can take upon themselves all of the power functions, exceed the power demand of the battery, and deal with any abrupt or unusual system power demands. Furthermore, ultracapacitors are compact, sealed, and completely maintenance free, and can be installed in near-inaccessible places.

Ultracapacitors have two operating modes when used with batteries. The first is to keep them in an uncharged state, and the second is to keep them charged, depending on the type of load. The second mode of operation, with an ultracapacitor bank, means that either passive or active balancing of each ultracapacitor cell must be occurring in real time. With Ioxus modules, cells are individually balanced, and adjusted to whatever voltage band is necessary without one circuit throwing off the balance of another. Also, long service life of an UPS system is necessary to achieve a good economic benefit. Ultracapacitor modules can take the critical load off of the battery pack to allow for servicing when batteries show signs of leakage and need to be replaced with new sets.

Ioxus Ultracapacitors are able to increase overall system energy time by a factor of more than two times in conjunction with batteries. Combined, these two power sources satisfy both short and long term power needs. Ultracapacitors possess a much higher specific power than batteries, and thus can be used as a virtually seamless buffer to enhance the power demands from the battery system. Floating ultracapacitor modules can be easily connected and disconnected as needed with a minimum change in voltage, as well as a minimum generation of electromagnetic interference. Therefore, ultracapacitors make the most out of these batteries by prolonging their life and providing additional energy backup.

In conclusion, ultracapacitors can take nearly all of the power functions upon themselves. They are not only compact and lightweight, but they are sealed and maintenance free, making them incredibly convenient. They increase the service life of the battery systems by offering hundreds of thousands charge-discharge cycles. As a result, users will see overall costs cut approximately in half. Finally, the state of charge of the battery array does not affect the characteristics of the ultracapacitor energy delivery capability and are able to effectively handle any abrupt of unusual system power demands, up to or exceeding the power demand capability of the battery alone.

    Ultracapacitor-powered uSTART™ available for Class 3 - 6 Vehicles

ONEONTA, N.Y., March 28, 2016 -- Ioxus, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of ultracapacitors and energy storage products, announced today that the uSTART™ engine starting system is now being offered as the industry's only drop-in replacement product that needs no special wiring. The Ioxus ultracapacitor-based product is designed to do all of the things that competitive products do not, such as increasing the vehicle bus voltage by greater than 10% during crank, reducing cranking time for more than 20%, reduce peak current to the starter by more than 15%, reduce the cycling seen by the battery by more than 40%, increasing starter life by more than 30%, and provide a built-in jump start system that will allow users to charge the capacitor from adjacent "dead" batteries and eliminate stranded trucks. All without any special wiring—simply drop-in uSTART in place of an existing battery!

The uSTART system from Ioxus is a two-terminal product, eliminating the rewiring required by competitive engine start modules. One of the existing read more...
