Ultracapacitors have two operating modes when used with batteries. The first is to keep them in an uncharged state, and the second is to keep them charged, depending on the type of load. The second mode of operation, with an ultracapacitor bank, means that either passive or active balancing of each ultracapacitor cell must be occurring in real time.
