2012 Energy Storage Predictions

It’s that time of year when we should take a look at 2012 trends in the energy storage industry. The market continues to change with increased renewable energy opportunities and further-developed technology. We’re predicting that ultracapacitors will become more prominent within transportation, server memory, smart grid and consumer electronics applications.

Below are some trends we are seeing for:

  1. The smart grid: Customers will evaluate ultracapacitors and batteries for energy storage for smaller regional consumption and to reduce dependency on grid. This includes industrial park, municipal and remote locations. Ultracapacitors will also assist in storage applications such as pitch control in wind turbines, especially in the Asia Pacific wind turbine market.
  2. Hybridized transportation: We’ll see a strong demand for hybridized asymmetric concepts, or an ultracapacitor and battery combination, in the commercial and transportation markets. Hybrid buses will continue to deploy ultracapacitors for regenerative braking in areas such as Asia, South America and Europe. This also includes the electrification of light rail as the best way to increase fleet efficiency.
  3. Consumer electronics applications: Manufacturers will adopt hybrid capacitors and ultracapacitors through 2012 to meet customer needs for fast-charging toothbrushes, clippers, lights and shavers. Ultracapacitors outlast the life-span of these devices with no maintenance and hardly any waste in landfills. Other consumer applications include medical devices that require LED lights. Hybrid capacitors will provide a way to charge those devices in fewer than 60 seconds, generating light for an entire day without recharging.
  4. Power backup and server memory: Applications such as redundant array of independent disks (RAID) servers need energy storage to provide memory and power backup. Ultracapacitors can replace lithium-ion batteries with longer lifespans, less maintenance and higher reliability in applications where short outages can cost millions of dollars per minute. Additionally, engineers can install ultracapacitors on uninterruptable power supply (UPS) server racks to make servers work more efficiently.  The ultracapacitors are installed directly on RAM chips in order to handle power spikes and power sags, providing a continuous, clean input voltage.

Ultracapacitors are primed for a high adoption rate in 2012. As you can see, numerous applications can benefit from their cost efficiency and high-power functionality.
