Giving EV Customers What They Want

You can’t always get what you want. It’s a great song, but not a great marketing slogan. Electric vehicle manufacturers are singing it too loudly these days, as the gap between what EVs are capable of doing and what consumers want them to do remains wide. Ultracapacitors will help change that tune in the automotive industry.

In a recent survey, 13,000 consumers told Deloitte they want EVs that go farther, charge faster and cost less. Deloitte’s report, “Unplugged: Electric vehicle realities versus consumer expectations,” draws on the comments of possible EV customers in 17 countries, many of whom said their expectations for recharging and range differed drastically from what manufacturers are offering.

In covering the Deloitte findings, Pete Danko of Earth Techling wrote, “The Deloitte report, by the way, matches up pretty well with what we saw earlier this year in research into American views on EVs conducted by the University of Delaware. In that case, researchers found consumers looking at driving range, fuel cost and charging time above other criteria when considering an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid.”

It doesn’t have to be this way.
