High-Powered Ultracapacitor Modules for UPS Applications

In the midst of hurricane season, we are experiencing more frequent brownouts and blackouts. The U.S. loses up to $100 billion each year due to power outages, so backup power is essential to keep businesses running. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) protect electronics from outages or disturbances by providing enough ride-through power until the power source regains stability. A UPS system using an ultracapacitor can provide enough short-term power during an outage to allow the organization to switch to an alternate power source or shut down electronics properly.

Ioxus’ high-powered iMOD ultracapacitor modules are designed for short-term UPS applications for power conditioning and voltage sag compensation. The modules’ low equivalent series resistance (ESR) provides higher efficiency and power capabilities for the quick burst of high power to the UPS. This power can prevent computer glitches, interrupted calls, assembly line disruptions or equipment malfunctions during a power shortage.

For example, cloud servers use ultracapacitors for short-term UPS. Several times a year, big cloud servers go down because UPS systems using battery-based energy storage do not come on fast enough before the power drops. This causes a total system restart procedure which can cost cloud-based companies millions of dollars. Replacing batteries with ultracapacitors in the UPS system prevents power, productivity and profit loss.

To improve UPS solutions and keep factories, data centers, warehouses or other facilities running on a smooth power supply, system designers and engineers can leverage high-powered ultracapacitor modules as a reliable and cost-effective energy source.

  • uSTART® Lead-Free Replacement for Truck Batteries

ONEONTA, N.Y.Jan. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Ioxus uSTART® has received two fleet industry awards for sustainability by eliminating lead-acid batteries with its ultracapacitor-based, drop-in battery replacement.

"With uSTART, fleets not only realize the benefits of improved starting reliability, there are equally important and real sustainability improvements from lead waste reduction," said Chad Hall, executive vice president and co-founder of Ioxus. "By replacing one of the batteries on a vehicle with a uSTART module, up to 15 fewer batteries are needed over the lifetime of the vehicle. This translates into 1,000 pounds of lead that will never need to be disposed of or allowed to affect groundwater."

EU legislation on batteries is embodied in the European Battery Directive.  Its objective is to contribute to the preservation and improvement of environmental quality by minimizing the negative impact of batteries and battery waste.  As these preservation efforts expand, sustainable technologies develop to manage and mitigate these risks.

Replacing a lead-acid battery with uSTART in a typical commercial vehicle creates measurable environmental benefits:
