The importance of the hybrid capacitor

Since Ioxus introduced our hybrid capacitor last fall, we’ve found ourselves in a curious position. The number of manufacturers creating these components is miniscule. Globally, there are only two of us, yet the demand for higher density energy storage is large and growing. Flashlights, LED applications, memory backup, portable hand tools, solar charge applications, wind turbines, automotive subsystems – all of these applications and others benefit from the 115-percent bump in energy density that our hybrid offers over the traditional ultracapacitor.

The hybrid’s ability to power applications more quickly and efficiently is drawing attention from a wide range of industries. Manufacturers and users in numerous markets have long sought the means to charge products more quickly, go longer between charges, and complete tens of thousands of cycles without replacing batteries. Now, they can, since the hybrid capacitor delivers energy density of about 4 Wh/kg, whereas ultracaps are closer to 2 Wh/kg.

That difference means that instead of getting 10 minutes of illumination from a flashlight powered by a conventional ultracapacitor and a light bulb, users can combine a hybrid capacitor with an LED and get three hours of light, as well as quick charge capability – as quick as 90-seconds.

The future for hybrid capacitors is bright, and not only because of what these components can do for lighting applications. We expect hybrid capacitors to play a big role in many other areas. We’re just getting started.
