Ioxus’ 3,000F iCAP™ Ultracapacitors Improve Fuel Efficiency in EMD Trucks

Today, Ioxus announced we’re working with ElectroMotive Design LLC (EMD), an engineering services company and a manufacturer of electric hybrid conversion systems for Class 2-8 buses and trucks. EMD will use Ioxus’ 3,000F iCAP™ cells as the primary energy storage technology for its fuel-saving hybrid electric technology, emDRIVE®.

Compared to other energy storage options, ultracapacitor technology dramatically enhances emDRIVE’s operation. EMD selected our 3,000F iCAP for regenerative braking energy recovery and acceleration assistance because it has the lowest weight, lowest equivalent series resistance (ESR) and highest power density in the market. EMD is now able to meet customer demands for a low-cost, easy-to-install system with lower operating costs, all thanks to ultracapacitors’ longer lifespans compared to batteries and their ability to handle more than 1 million charge and discharge cycles.

A high cycle life, high charge acceptance rate of 95 percent, wide temperature operating range and instantaneous recharge make ultracapacitors the ideal energy storage solution for hybrid-electrical applications. Ultracapacitors are the only technology able to capture the high peak power levels of a regenerative braking event in a compact, lightweight package.
