Lower Cooling Requirements Lead to Better System Design

Customers looking to implement ultracapacitors in any application frequently inquire about aspects of the system design and its overall benefits. One important consideration that remains top of mind for our customers is cooling requirements, especially in industries where these are most important, such as automotive and hybrid bus applications.

With the introduction of our THiNCAP™ iMOD™ modules, we made great strides in reducing cooling requirements. The smaller footprint design of the thin cells improves complete systems. The more efficient cell design reduces the total cost of ownership and reduces system complexity and cooling requirements, as it allows for heat mitigation through double-sided cooling. Cooling is considerably easier with thin-cell designs than with cylindrical cells because of a larger surface area to disburse and move air over it, and the flat cell surface area serves as an efficient heat transfer plate from both sides of the cell. It’s more difficult to achieve the same benefits with cylindrical cell designs since the air must flow in different directions and wrap around the canister-like cell.

Ioxus THiNCAP™ iMOD™ modules reduce cooling requirements

Automotive and hybrid bus applications typically have high cooling requirements, so they benefit greatly from ultracapacitors with a low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The ESR measures resistance within the capacitor, and as the rating goes up, efficiency is lost. A lower ESR means higher efficiency, thereby boosting power, minimizing heat generation and improving overall performance. Cells with a low ESR increase efficiency and power capabilities of the cell in order to reduce the cooling requirements and lengthen the cell’s operating lifespan.

Customers demand increasingly improved designs to enhance their systems, and ultracapacitor technology and form factor continue to develop to meet expectations.
