The New New York Works for Business, Clean Energy Manufacturing

Though we expanded to our new headquarters in the former National Soccer Hall of Fame last year, Ioxus has called the small town of Oneonta, N.Y. home ever since our founding. The ideal location for our business, Oneonta is situated in the center of the energy technology triangle formed by Albany, Binghamton and Rochester. New York is an attractive state for businesses, especially clean energy startups, to grow and expand, as highlighted by the “NewNew York Works for Business” campaign.  Last year, the Brookings Institution ranked the Albany metro area first in the country for its energy technology economy. As a proud New York business, we can testify that this state is thestate in which to do business.

As proof that the new New York is in fact working for business, Ioxus continues to develop clean energy technologies with the “Made in America” label, starting in our great home state of New York. Ioxus is dedicated to bringing more jobs to the area and investing in domestic cleantech innovation. We have increased employee count fivefold, and following our acquisition of Japanese company, Power Systems, Ltd., we are consolidating 100 percent of our ultracapacitor manufacturing operations to New York. As part of the steering committee of the Council on Competitiveness, Ioxus recommends more government support for local manufacturing in order to keep top talent stateside. This way potential employees will not be enticed to lend their creativity and intellect elsewhere.

Ioxus is just one example of the numerous start-up companies in the state; combined, New York-based start-ups will help local economic growth, further propelling business in the state.

  • uSTART® Lead-Free Replacement for Truck Batteries

ONEONTA, N.Y.Jan. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Ioxus uSTART® has received two fleet industry awards for sustainability by eliminating lead-acid batteries with its ultracapacitor-based, drop-in battery replacement.

"With uSTART, fleets not only realize the benefits of improved starting reliability, there are equally important and real sustainability improvements from lead waste reduction," said Chad Hall, executive vice president and co-founder of Ioxus. "By replacing one of the batteries on a vehicle with a uSTART module, up to 15 fewer batteries are needed over the lifetime of the vehicle. This translates into 1,000 pounds of lead that will never need to be disposed of or allowed to affect groundwater."

EU legislation on batteries is embodied in the European Battery Directive.  Its objective is to contribute to the preservation and improvement of environmental quality by minimizing the negative impact of batteries and battery waste.  As these preservation efforts expand, sustainable technologies develop to manage and mitigate these risks.

Replacing a lead-acid battery with uSTART in a typical commercial vehicle creates measurable environmental benefits:
