Pike Research Issues Report on Ultracaps; Discusses Role in Meeting New Vehicle Emissions Requirements

Last week, Pike Research issued a research report on how “Ultracapacitors Can Play a Key Role in Meeting New Vehicle Emissions Requirements.” The report highlights the need for ultracapacitors, shortly after President Obama announced his fuel economy and emissions rules for medium and heavy-duty trucks in August. The report also discusses the proposals of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the new fuel-efficiency standards be voluntary from 2013 through 2015, but mandatory in 2016.

This is an important time for the energy storage market to focus on ultracapacitor technology differentiators. Ioxus predicts the global consumption for ultracapacitors will reach $1.16 billion by 2015 and $7 billion by 2020. Ultracapacitor manufacturers like Ioxus continue to work on perfecting the technology to support the transportation market, including hybrid cars and electric vehicles, by decreasing the cost and increasing the energy and power density, reliability and performance. The lack of this functionality in the market to date has been a downfall for the industry.  But, with the focus on manufacturing better technology and the growing number of hybrid trucks and stop-start vehicles being produced, it’s important to have effective energy storage technology that can temporarily shut off the engine when stopped or idling and then automatically restart without worrying about overheating, slow recharge rates or high maintenance.
