Thin-Film, Prismatic Cells Expand the Ioxus Product Line

A few weeks ago, we introduced Ioxus’ thin-film prismatic, high-energy cells at the PCIM Europe show in Germany. These cells are part of a new product line that stems from our acquisition of Power Systems, Ltd., a Japanese company that specialized in flexible, slim-pack electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). These cells allow Ioxus to manufacture high-power, high-energy modules. We can now provide modules with up to 260 volts in a small package, which can be used for energy delivery for high current peak shaving. These flexible ultracapacitor energy solutions are used in industrial and medical applications, such as voltage sag compensation or MRIs, as well as in transportation and manufacturing applications. Thin-film cell solutions are particularly useful in parts of the world where field hospitals or factories cannot get the smooth voltage input or peak current necessary from the grid to power their machines. In such cases, power can be extracted from a bank of ultracapacitor modules instead.

The new laminated packs add to Ioxus’ technology portfolio by offering customers an improved way of using ultracapacitors, as well as a wider, more flexible product range. And while laminated pack cells typically offer two to three times more power in energy than cylindrical cells at the cell level, don’t count cylindrical cells out yet. They still are useful in mobile applications and are a less expensive option for energy storage applications. Having both flat and cylindrical cells in our repertoire allows Ioxus to offer the best technology to meet the various needs of our customers, and we look forward to more developments to come from our Power Systems acquisition.

    ONEONTA, N.Y.Jan. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Ioxus uSTART® has received two fleet industry awards for sustainability by eliminating lead-acid batteries with its ultracapacitor-based, drop-in battery replacement.

    "With uSTART, fleets not only realize the benefits of improved starting reliability, there are equally important and real sustainability improvements from lead waste reduction," said Chad Hall, executive vice president and co-founder of Ioxus.     EU legislation on batteries is embodied in the European Battery Directive.  Its objective is to contribute to the preservation and improvement of environmental quality by minimizing the negative impact of batteries and battery waste.  As these preservation efforts expand, sustainable technologies develop to manage and mitigate these risks.
