Ultracapacitors Improve UPS Backup Power Solutions

Brownouts and power outages are becoming more common, and are often caused by storms, faults at power stations, system overloading and even human error. For applications where a loss of electrical power could be detrimental –like data centers, telecommunication equipment, high value factory production lines, computer servers or hospitals — having a source of backup power through uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) is important. The UPS is capable of providing protection instantaneously for brief amounts of time, safeguarding applications with smooth, continuous, input voltage. Ultracapacitors are an ideal energy storage device for UPS to handle power losses and provide ride-through during a drop in voltage.

With the ability to handle high charge and discharge rates, a long lifespan, low maintenance requirements, and a wide temperature range tolerance, ultracapacitors outperform batteries and provide a more reliable energy source. While batteries can provide the necessary power, their lifespans are relatively short when used in UPS applications. Batteries require frequent maintenance and product replacement. Alternatively, engineers and designers are turning to ultracapacitors for a more reliable and cost-effective source of energy to supply the UPS.

UPS is most often used to provide ride-through during brief power disturbances, so ultracapacitors can protect against voltage disruptions, ensuring a smooth power supply to medical equipment, server memory and other mission-critical applications.
