When it Comes to Durability, Our Modules Set The Bar

Ultracapacitor-based energy storage systems are quickly becoming the standard for hybrid buses. The technology improves overall performance by alleviating the battery from many of its responsibilities. The battery is still needed to provide the consistent low energy for long periods of time, while the ultracapacitor handles all of the high current work due to its low resistance. Using this hybridized storage system allows for the strengths and weaknesses of each technology to balance out, resulting in reduced battery size, strong energy-recapture, increased driving range and longer battery life.

Of course the hybrid bus application is a demanding one, with many customers asking for a longer-life product than what is currently offered by our competitors.. We’ve responded by designing our flagship hybrid bus product, the 48 Volt (V) / 165 Farad (F) module, to be the most durable on the market – built to withstand the harshest transportation conditions. Today we’ve released the data from our extensive thermal and vibration durability testing to support our beliefs.
As seen below, when compared to other ultracapacitors on the market, the 48V/165F modules perform at optimal levels in thermal and shock/vibration durability.

  • Ioxus has passed SAE: J2380, ISO – 16750-3 (Table 12 & 14). This means that the Ioxus products have withstood 96 hours of testing at almost 4 times the g rate as the competitor module.
  • Competitor datasheet only certifies passing the SAE J2380, which is the least invasive of three tests for vibration.


The following chart shows the temperature increase in the modules, when starting the modules at ambient temperature (23°C), while continuously cycling with 120A RMS. The lower temperature increase in the Ioxus modules leads directly to a longer life, as temperature is one of the leading factors in determining the life of an ultracapacitor.


We’re proud of these results and to offer an eight year warranty, which is double that of our competitor’s products. Ioxus listened to its customers to help design these more durable products and will extend these designs to the several major product releases expected in the coming months.

    ONEONTA, N.Y.Jan. 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Ioxus uSTART® has received two fleet industry awards for sustainability by eliminating lead-acid batteries with its ultracapacitor-based, drop-in battery replacement.
