The Year of the Ultrcap: Highlights From the Ioxus 2014 Calendar

According to research from IDTechEx early last year, 2014 was expected to be a turning point for ultracapacitor adoption and projected the industry will hit $6 billion in 10 years. As GreenBiz’s Heather Clancy wrote in August, “the role of ultracapacitors in energy storage and efficiency applications moved toward center stage this summer with high-profile transportation projects.”

We at Ioxus can confirm – 2014 was a fantastic year for the technology and for advancing alternative energy storage systems globally. Everything from new facilities and products, to a growing list of users and investors, I thought I’d run through some of the highlights of a successful 2014 for Ioxus.

Let’s jump to April, when Ioxus received $21 million from the IFC and the Westly Group to help expand its customer service, sales and manufacturing in Asia, with a focus on China. Using our iMOD™, diesel buses in China are cutting emissions by up to 72 percent.

Speaking of iMOD, not soon after we released the iMOD X-Series™, a new series of module systems for a common, single-piece extruded housing for application across all of its axial ultracapacitors. With this, Ioxus has simplified the design and instillation for the end-user. We also announced two new customers in rail and oil & gas. The Long Island Rail Road is using our technology to reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent and improve railway operations. FlexGen® Power Systems selected our ultracapacitors after carefully comparing our systems to competitors and found Ioxus’ performance, reliability and cost could not be matched.

With a growing client base and an increase in global demand for Ioxus’ products, we announced the opening of our second manufacturing plant for increased capacity for both electrode manufacturing and module assembly. Months later, the expansion continued with the incorporation of Ioxus (Shanghai) Clean Energy Technology Co., Ltd., in Shanghai, China. Now, through this new facility, we can sell directly to the Asian market and better serve the needs of our rapidly growing global customer base.

Wrapping up the year were two exciting, industry firsts in energy storage. One of the fastest markets for ultracapacitors is hybrid buses – a demanding, harsh environment. We set out to prove that our flagship hybrid bus product, the 48 Volt (V) / 165 Farad (F) module is the most durable available. Success! Our data reaffirms that our modules significantly outpace competitors including Maxwell, in thermal and vibration durability testing. This was quickly followed by a breakthrough in ultracapacitor technology, and a first for the automotive industry – high temperature cells. Our Titan™ technology features best in class stability, endurance and cycleability. By making significant advances in the fundamental science behind ultracapacitor performance, we are able to deliver the widest operating range today at -40 to 85°C, while delivering 2.7 volts at these temps!

  • Ioxus uSTART® Battery Replacement for Heavy Equipment Increases Starting Reliability
